Wicked
Colette loves plays! This is a fact. She loves the drama, costumes, actors, music, dancing and everything else that goes into a play. So, when she found out that our friend Jean was giving her a ticket to Wicked for her birthday, she was in drama heaven! Well, the day finally came yesterday at the matinee at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. It was an unbelievable performance and, though I feel a bit silly admitting it, we both got a bit weepy during "Defying Gravity." Sung in the context of the play, it is soul rattling. When I hear the song on it's own outside the theatre, it is beautiful, but doesn't have the same knock-your-broomstick-out-from-under-you feeling. Anyway, Colette, Jim and I had a marvelous time.
After the show, and much to Colette's shock and elation, we got to go backstage. My friend Jean's Mom, Louise, knows the wardrobe person in this production. Louise found out we were going, called her friend and voila, we were in. We decided to have it be a surprise for Colette until the last second. We were shown around the stage, which I found out was dismantled and traveled with the company! If we looked over our heads, we could see chariots, beds etc..We saw a small part of the yellow brick road, Kansas cornstalks, the witches hat, but sadly didn't see the ruby slippers, and, since the lady showing us around was the person in charge of Advance Wardrobe, we got to see lots of wardrobe! Completely stunning and amazing is how best to describe it, right down to the buttons. The costumes were exquisite and, she told us, very expensive because they were custom and hand made. There were some that had Oz embroidered all over and boots made in Nova Scotia that were one-of-a-kind and $1600 a pair.
The only thing that she said we could photograph was the Great Oz himself which was huge and kind of scary during the play. It lights up and moves and it is loud! It is the "wall" he stands behind and tries to intimidate visitors.
So, here we are at Wicked. If you have the chance to go and see it, do so. It is quite entertaining.
